A puzzle

As the penguins would have been too easy to identify, I have added a picture of a bird that may be a bit more challenging - but I am expecting that Carl Chapman will find it straightforward - are you out there Carl?

Only clue - Julia nearly stood on it at Stromness Bay, South Georgia...

  1. Yes I’m here ... well this is a juvenile tern species – I would say maybe a few weeks old. According to Hadoram Shirihai’s “Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife” (which is a terrific book by the way written by arguably one of the best bird watchers in the world) there are several terns seen in the Antarctic region – Common Tern, Arctic Tern, South American Tern, Kerguelen Tern, White fronted Tern and Antarctic Tern. Only the last four breed in the region.
The clue however is in the location as only the last in the list breed s on South Georgia so this must be a JUVENILE ANTARCTIC TERN.

    1. My good friend Carl is of course correct. It is a fledgling Antarctic Tern. We moved quietly by hoping that its parent would soon find it.
